How to read your Calibre library in a browser, with your computer off

Updated October 27, 2026 · 5 minute read

Three ways to reach your Calibre books from any browser, at work, on a borrowed laptop or on a tablet, and what each one asks of you.

Option 1: Calibre’s content server

Calibre has a built-in web server: Connect/share → Start content server. Other devices on your home Wi-Fi can then open your library in a browser. It is free and already installed.

  • Your computer has to stay on, awake and running Calibre.
  • Reaching it from outside your home means port forwarding or a tunnel, and keeping that secure.

Option 2: Calibre-Web on your own server

Calibre-Web is open-source software you install on a home server, a NAS or a rented server, usually with Docker. It serves one library per instance from that server’s disk.

  • You need a machine that is always on, and you look after updates, backups and security.
  • A good fit if you already run a home server.

Option 3: useCalibre, hosted for you

useCalibre reads a copy of your library from cloud storage you own and keeps the catalog online, so it works with your computer off and nothing at home is exposed.

  1. Copy your library to an S3-compatible bucket (see the cloud guide).
  2. Connect it in useCalibre with a read-only key.
  3. Open app.usecalibre.com from any browser and read.

The reader handles EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, FB2, CBZ, PDF and more, remembers your place on every device, and can keep books offline. See all features or the full comparison.

Which one should I use?

  • Only at home, occasionally: the content server.
  • You enjoy running a home server: Calibre-Web.
  • Anywhere, any time, with nothing to maintain: useCalibre.
